APTEA Teacher’s Training

Introduction

Welcome to Teach for Life.  The course has been prepared in cooperation with APTEA and the Commission for Enrichment and Certification.  The videos together with this manual may be used to qualify teachers for APTEA Certification Level 1.  The series consist of 17 sessions and may be used singularly or several at a time.  However, in order to qualify for certification, all sessions must be covered and the final project submitted (instructions follow the final session).

Well-trained teachers are the key to the success of a school.  But, what is meant by “well-trained”?  Some school administrators and pastors would see “well-trained” as being experts in the content to be taught.  For example, a pastor who is very knowledgeable in theology and biblical studies would be considered highly qualified to teach theology and Bible.  However, that is not enough.

One of the qualifications that Paul gave Timothy for leaders was that they should be able to teach (1 Tim 3:2).  Teaching is more than competence in content.  Knowing the content to be taught is very important but it is like having only one leg to a chair—and it is very difficult to sit on a chair with one leg.  Being able to teach also involves understanding the learning process, being competent in using appropriate teaching strategies, and utilizing beneficial evaluation or assessment methods.

These training sessions have been planned to help the expert in content to also become expert in being able to teach.  One major goal of APTEA is the pursuit of excellence in training across the Continent—endorsement actually requires 75% of all full-time faculty to be certified.  This training helps to make certification possible.  The sessions also utilize the Discovery Series Book: Principles of Teaching: Discovering How to Make Learning Happen.  This book is digitally included with the study.
